There are various ways to date someone. A quick glance at their face is one way, carbon-dating another. Failing those, checking the songs that come to their mind when presented with a key word or phrase is surefire winner. Hence the term opportunities lands me, instantaneously, in 1986 and my formative years, courtesy of the evergreen Pet Shop Boys.
Oh, there’s a lot of opportunities
If you know when to take them, you know?
There’s a lot of opportunities
If there aren’t, you can make them
Make or break them
All this is a convoluted way of explaining that my writing opportunities page has had something of an update and it’s stuffed full of good things. Clearly, rejoicing throughout the land will follow in short order.
Do share the page with friends, family and others, insisting that they subscribe. I have to justify the page’s existence somehow. As it is, my own existence has been in doubt for some time.
Otherwise, I’m reminded that the Opportunities song has a longer title: Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money). And are we? As writers and creatives, making lots of money?
Well, obviously, some do but, with fierce competition at every turn for those fleeting opportunities, are we making what we could and when we do get our hands on some hard-won dosh (yup, I’m aging myself again) do we handle it well?
While you’re considering life’s annoying fundamentals, try popping along to the Arts Council England website as those formidable funding gatekeepers have published a handy Freelancers’ Handbook and Resources Directory.
Really, yes, they have! And, most importantly, it’s free.
It’s available for download with just a couple of clicks – tap on the link above or on the image below if you need any further proof.

Until the next time, that’s your lot – but with an added bonus feature thrown in for good measure: with love to anyone who has been catapulted back 40 years (no, I don’t believe it either), here’s a little treat…
Don’t they look young!
